Mini crime wave breaks the peace and quiet

Monday, 31st January 2011.

Haverhill has been hit by a mini crime wave over the past few days, after several very quiet weeks.

Apart from shoplifting and some of the spate of catalytic converter thefts which have gone on across the county, the town has had a relatively crime-free winter.

But between Wednesday and Sunday there were five burglaries, three thefts and a criminal damage, many of which are being linked by police.

Two burglaries which police are linking took place over Thursday night, one at Claudian Close between 7.55pm and 4pm the following day, when thieves broke into a house by forcing a lock and stole an mp3 player, a laptop and a photo of sentimental value.

Calls in relation to this incident should be made to DC Jacqueline Mumford at West Suffolk CID on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The other was in Tasman Road between 12am and 4am on Friday, when burglars got into a house through an insecure door and stole a laptop, jewellery, an mp3 player, cash and bank cards.

An attempt was made to steal a car parked outside but it was not taken. The cards were used later that morning in Willingham, Cambridgeshire.

Calls in relation to this incident should be made to DC Mike Blayney at West Suffolk CID on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The same night someone broke into Bar Vu in Jubilee Walk by forcing a window and stole alcohol, audio equipment and a TV.

Calls in relation to this incident should be made to PC Guy Ainsworth at Haverhill Police on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Then from Wednesday to Friday there were four offences on the Clements estate which police are linking together.

In Parkside, between 6am on Wednesday and 2.30pm on Friday, someone broke into a garage and stole a silver and blue Honda motorbike which was later found abandoned in Ladygate Wood.

On Wednesday in York Road between 2pm and 10pm a garage door in a garage block was damaged.

In Holbrook Road, between 3pm on Thursday and 3.30pm on Friday the thieves broke into a garage and removed a wheelchair and a mobility scooter but left them outside and took nothing.

In Fritton Court, between 5pm on Thursday and 7am on Friday they broke into a white Ford Escort van by unknown means, searched inside and stole the roof rack.

Calls in relation to all four of these incidents should be made to PC Will Wright at the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Over the weekend Jan Cavelle furniture makers in Rookwood Way were targeted twice in two days, by the same thieves, police think.

Between 12pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday the catalytic converter was stolen from a white Iveco van in the yard.

Then between 1pm on Sunday and and 8am today the thieves returned and broke into the yard again by damaging a padlock on a gate, broke into a cage by damaging a padlock and stole five gas canisters.

Calls in relation to these two incidents should be made to the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

PC Rupert Beynon of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team appealed to residents to make sure their doors were secure, to think about extra security for sheds and garages and to report any suspicious activity late at night.
