Neighbours thanked for help to beat back the tide

Thursday, 8th November 2001.

A NEW resident of Haverhill whose home was flooded recently wants to thank all her neighbours who rallied round to help.

Prison officer Rebecca Girling, 22, and her partner Paul Miller only moved into their home two months ago, but had everything on the ground floor ruined when inch deep water cascaded in.

Although they still have no carpets and are waiting for an insurance assessment of the damage, Ms Girling believes it could have been far worse without the efforts of neighbours.

They rushed around with barricades and one even brought a power drill to fix protection to the front door to keep the water out of their Cleves Road home.

Ms Girling said: “It was only our house that was flooded, we are at the bottom of the hill and all the water I came down to our house. The builders I had been clearing the land behind our
house to build on and the water just poured off it. Overnight it filled up the reservoir pond in front of our house and I have never seen my water in it before.

“My boyfriend was at work and I was on my own. I did not know what was happening, my neighbours knew before I did.

“Someone knocked and they were putting barriers down before I had even stood up. They were absolutely brilliant, they all rallied round to help and it could have been an awful lot worse.

“I don’t even know most of their names. We haven’t lived here long enough to get to know people vet, but I would like to thank them all. I would have been absolutely lost without them, I would not have know what to I do.”
