New £630,000 Children's Play Area for Haverhill

Wednesday, 18th February 2009.

Extra funding is to be injected into the Haverhill Leisure Centre modernisation project to create an exciting new £630,000 play area for children.

The brand new facilities will replace the existing Kidzone play area on the first floor of the building in Ehringshausen Way. Designed for children aged from 18 months to 12-years-old, it will feature ball pools, cargo nets, slides and a soft play area. Two separate rooms will also be created to hire for birthday parties or meetings, along with a completely new café.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council has earmarked £500,000 for the work, while Abbeycroft Leisure will provide the remaining £130,000. The joint investment has been made possible after the £5.2million project to modernise the Leisure Centre with a new reception, changing facilities, pool viewing area, dance room and extended fitness suite came in under budget.

Work on the project will take place over the coming months. The finished café and play area will be unveiled alongside the remainder of the newly refurbished building when it officially opens this summer.

Cllr Lynsey Alexander, portfolio holder for culture and sport at St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said:

“This extra investment once again underlines our commitment to developing new and exciting leisure opportunities which people of all ages can enjoy. The new play area will be significantly bigger than the previous facilities, and will include seating areas for parents so they can relax over a cup of coffee while their children have fun with their friends.

“Once complete, the newly refurbished centre will be a valuable addition to leisure provision in Haverhill, providing people living in the area with modern, first class facilities for the future.”

Warren Smyth, chief executive of Abbeycroft Leisure, said:

“We are delighted to be able to add this exciting, modern play area to Haverhill Leisure Centre. Light, bright and colourful, it has been specially designed to provide the perfect play environment for children of all ages, helping to encourage youngsters to lead a healthy, active lifestyle from an early age.

“The new play area is a valuable addition to the huge range of services which will be on offer once we reopen the refurbished centre in July. We hope our customers will really appreciate the huge changes which have taken place and thoroughly enjoy using the new facilities.”
