New bells ready to ring

Thursday, 7th September 2000.

CHURCH bells will ring out at Steeple Bumpstead Parish Church for the first time in 90 years, following the arrival of two new bells and repairs to two others.
In 1998, church warden Geoffrey Westrope took over the scheme to get the bells ringing again.
Members of the Friends of Steeple Bumpstead Parish Church, who launched an ambitious project to restore the bells, travelled to Loughborough to watch the new bells being cast.
All the bells have been electronically tuned and a new bell frame and ringing platform has been constructed.
Many people in the village and outside donated their expertise and time in construction and transportation of the bells.
The Bishop of Colchester will conduct a thanksgiving service in the church on September 24.
