New county chief fire officer appointed

Thursday, 7th November 2013.

Suffolk’s new chief fire officer is Mark Hardingham, who previously served as deputy chief fire officer for the county..

Starting with immediate effect, Mark will take responsibility for leading Suffolk’s 700 full-time and on-call firefighters and staff, 35 fire stations, trading standards, community safety and emergency planning services.

Mark has been in the fire service for 22 years, starting in Essex as a firefighter in 1991. He transferred to Suffolk Fire and Rescue in 2010.

He said: "I'm delighted and honoured to have been appointed into the chief fire officer role in Suffolk.

"In the last three years, I've been inspired by the commitment and sheer professionalism of our firefighters in the face of some difficult situations.

"Leading the service will come with some big challenges, but also fantastic opportunities and I look forward to leading us through these with my management team.

"Of course, the chief fire officer role has wider public protection responsibilities, including trading standards, community safety and emergency planning.

"I'm delighted to be working closely with staff in each of these areas as they continue to deliver fantastic services to people across Suffolk."

Mark replaces Andy Fry who left the county council to become chief fire officer at Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service last month.

Cllr Colin Spence, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for public protection, welcomed the appointment. He said: "Mark is a committed public servant and understands Suffolk. He will be a first class chief fire officer.

“Mark works hard for the people of Suffolk and is respected by his colleagues. I look forward to working with him and his team to keep Suffolk safe.”
