New darts league will raise cash for hospice

Friday, 18th February 2011.

Leaders of a new charity darts league in Haverhill are hoping to sign up more teams and attract trophy sponsors.

The Hav Charity Darts League – which will raise funds for St Nicholas Hospice Care – is set to launch in April or May.

Andrew Pordage, who has been involved with darts in the town for 30 years, said the league would be run on Monday nights, with summer and winter seasons.

“We hope all the teams will run events to raise funds for St Nicholas Hospice Care,” he said. “There will be a charity pool and darts night open to everyone in winter and summer, where all proceeds will go into the charity pot, and we will also encourage all the venues to run events in aid of the hospice.

"At the end of each season, a trophy will be presented to the team which has raised the most money.”

The new league chose to support St Nicholas Hospice Care after Andrew’s mother, Lynn Pordage, spent time there before she died last year.

“From my point of view there’s no better local charity. The charity trophy will be in my mum’s name and the team that raises the most will keep it for a season,” he said.

“We’re hoping teams will really embrace the charity side and take a bit of pride in how much they raise, maybe even holding events outside the darts league to boost their total.”

The new league is being aimed at all abilities of darts players and will hold fun events including a handicap cup.

Five teams have already signed up to join the summer league – but more are welcome. The new league is also looking for firms to sponsor trophies, which will be handed out at the bi-annual awards nights.

Hospice community fund raiser Ian Norris said: “This is a great opportunity for darts fans to do something they enjoy and do their bit for the hospice. We wish the new league all the best.”
