New mayor and committee chairs chosen at St Edmundsbury

Thursday, 19th May 2011.

The new Mayor of St Edmundsbury has begun his term of office following his election at the mayor-making meeting of St Edmundsbury Borough Council today.

Having accepted the role, Cllr Christopher Spicer, ward member for Pakenham, chaired the meeting of the full council, which had begun with a civic procession from the apex, the new venue in Charter Square, to the Athenaeum.

Cllr Terry Buckle, ward member for Moreton Hall, will serve as deputy mayor.

The mayor’s charities are St John’s Ambulance and the Citizens’ Advice Bureaux.

Cllr John Griffiths was re-elected as leader of the council for a four-year term. His portfolio remains rural affairs and external relationships.

The new Cabinet includes:
• Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, ward member for Rougham, as deputy leader and portfolio holder for economy and asset management and culture and sport.
• Cllr Robert Everitt, ward member for Minden, as portfolio holder for Bury St Edmunds and community safety.
• Cllr Anne Gower, ward member for Haverhill North, as portfolio holder for Haverhill and housing.
• Cllr Terry Clements, ward member for Horringer and Whelnetham, as portfolio holder for transport and planning.
• Cllr Dave Ray, ward member for Barningham, as portfolio holder for resources, performance, and organisational development.
• Cllr Peter Stevens, ward member for Cavendish, as portfolio holder for environment and street scene.

The overview and scrutiny committee will be chaired by Cllr David Nettleton with Cllr Ian Houlder as vice-chair.

The performance and audit committee will continue to be chaired by Cllr John Hale with Cllr Christopher Spicer as vice-chair.
