New police commissioner takes over today

Thursday, 22nd November 2012.

The new police and crime commissioner for Suffolk officially declared his acceptance of office yesterday.

Tim Passmore, a Conservative district councillor from Mid-Suffolk, triumphed narrowly in last week's election.

He came second overall to Labour's Jane Basham, but after the other two candidates' second choice votes were added in, he was declared the winner.

A special ceremony was held for him to accept the new role at Police Headquarters in Martlesham.

Stephen Baker, the police area returning officer oversaw the proceedings, which took place in the Assembly Hall.

Representatives from across the county were invited to witness the historic occasion.

Mr Passmore takes up his new job today.
