New session planned for catalytic converter marking

Tuesday, 15th March 2011.

Marking sessions for catalytic converters are to continue, with another one being planned in Haverhill next week.

There were two held by police recently at Mitchells Motors in Hollands Road, Haverhill, and next week's session will be held there as well, between 10am and 4pm.

Detective Inspector Andy Footer coordinated the recent sessions, and was very pleased with the turn-out. “Letters were sent to owners of the types of vehicles that catalytic converter thieves are targeting, and we got a good response, with some drivers booking slots and others turning up on the day.

“Those who attended the sessions got their registration number marked onto the catalytic converter, and heat-proof paint was also applied.

“Officers who stop suspicious vehicles containing car parts can now check for these two markings, as can scrap metal dealers when they are receiving parts for sale. All drivers also received signs for their vehicles to warn thieves that their catalytic converter is identifiable.

"If a thief spots one of the signs in a van window stating the catalytic converter is marked they may be deterred, so I want to give as many people as possible the chance to get theirs marked and beat the criminals.”

Police are keen to see drivers of vans and 4x4s in particular coming along to have their catalytic converters marked.

There have been a large number of catalytic converter thefts across Suffolk in recent months.

Any persons or vehicles seen acting suspiciously around other vehicles should be reported to police on 01473 613500. Dial 999 if a crime is in progress.
