New surgery sparks fears for practice

Thursday, 5th October 2000.

A HAVERHILL councillor has raised concerns that a new surgery planned for Hanchett End will result in a reduction in facilities at the Clements Surgery.

Coun Mary Martin, a member of St Edmundsbury Borough and Haverhill Town Councils, raised the issue at a town council meeting.

But doctors at the surgery and the practice manager say they want to improve their facilities and offer more services to all their patients.

The Clements Surgery is overcrowded and there is no room to extend it. Coun Martin said she was concerned there would be only a morning surgery and no afternoon or evening one at Clements after the Hanchett End surgery opened.

"I fully appreciate the need to provide a practice at Hanchett End because they have got no surgery, but I am concerned about the reduction of services at the Clements Surgery," Coun Martin said.

Yvonne Mayes, practice manager at the Clements Surgery, said facilities at the new surgery would be available for all patients and it was hoped to add new services.

Dr Bernard Piat of the surgery said conditions were too cramped.
