New warning about thefts from vehicles

Tuesday, 26th January 2010.

A spate of thefts from vehicles in and around the Haverhill area has led police to reinforce their warnings to motorists.

Haverhill police are dealing with ten incidents within the last week which they are linking as likely to be the work of the same thieves.

These have taken place in Haverhill, Clare and Hundon, and the majority have been from cars left unlocked by their owners.

PC Carl Edley of Haverhill police said they had not identified any pattern to the thefts yet, but items taken were usually anuthing small and valuable, such as sat navs, iPods, Wii, jewellery, etc.

"We would urge motorists to ensure their vehicles are locked and to remove all valuable objects," he said.

Most incidents have happened overnight, and in some cases windows have been smashed to gain access.

The thieves generally will have tried all the vehicles in a particular street, so being parked on a drive is no safeguard if it is accessible from the road.

Police also ask the public to look out for anything suspicious which might help them to catch the thieves.
