New warning after a series of thefts from cars

Thursday, 12th January 2012.

Police in Haverhill are reminding people to 'lock it or lose it' when it comes to keeping valuables in their cars, after a series of eight thefts in the past few days.

Three vehicles were broken into overnight between Saturday and Sunday, January 7 and 8, at locations in Horsham Close, Abercorn Court and Bute Court.

A further five vehicles were targeted overnight between Monday and Tuesday, January 9 and 10, in Pinhoe Drive, Betony Walk, Mallow Walk and Harewood Terrace as well as a location in Westward Deals, Kedington.

In many of these incidents, the vehicles had been left unlocked.

PC Michael Potter of the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) said: "It's vitally important not to make life easy for opportunist criminals.

"You should always make sure that doors are locked and that valuables are removed from your vehicle rather than hidden - you can even leave your glovebox open to show that it is empty.

"Wiping away any suction marks on your window left from a sat nav makes your car or van less appealing and trying to park in a well-lit areas can deter would-be criminals from targeting your vehicle in the first place. It's always best to use a garage if you have one, or have the opportunity to.

"By taking simple these simple steps, you can deter thieves and make your car far less vulnerable to break-ins. It's easy to do but it's still concerning how many people fail to take crime prevention measures."

In response to these incidents, police will be conducting both high-visibility and covert patrols to deter and target offenders.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously around parked vehicles call the police immediately on 999, giving as a full as description as possible.
