New year starts with a spate of thefts from cars and sheds

Police are warning people to be extra careful about their property after the new year has begun with a series of thefts in the town.

Six vehicles were broken into overnight on the Chalkstone estate between 7pm on Thursday and 11am on Friday.

Two cars were targeted while parked in Millfields Way - a Volvo and a Peugeot were broken into, but nothing stolen.

A Land Rover Discovery was broken into while parked behind Kirtling Place and a purse stolen from inside.

A car parked at the rear of Glemsford Place had its window smashed but nothing stolen.

A Renault Laguna parked in Bourne Road was broken into and a sat nav lead and window bracket taken and a Vauxhall Vivaro parked in Elmdon Place had a sat nav stolen.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and saw any suspicious activity. Calls should be made to Sergeant Gary Miller at Haverhill Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

An elderly woman confronted two men who had entered and burgled her home at around 9.30pm on Friday in Mill Road.

The 74-year-old woman was disturbed by two men in her bedroom. One of the men grabbed her by her arm and demanded to know where she kept her money. The second man then searched her bedroom.

The woman managed to pull her emergency cord to get help.

It is thought that the two men made off the same way they entered the property, through an insecure window.

They left with a purse containing a small amount of cash.

The woman has been left quite shaken by the incident and police are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area and saw two men acting suspiciously.

The first man was white around 6ft tall, and wore dark clothing. The second man was white, shorter at around 5ft 8in and of stocky build. He wore a flat cap and also dark clothing.

If you were in the area and noticed any suspicious activity or recognise the men from the descriptions you are asked to call DC Mike Blayney at Bury St Edmunds CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A large quantity of frozen meat and hanging baskets were stolen at around 1am on Saturday at an address in Chauntry Road.

The rear garden was entered and someone gained entry to a shed where a freezer was opened and a large quantity of frozen meat was taken. Two metal hanging baskets were also stolen from the garden.

A vehicle was heard leaving the area at around the same time.

Police would like to hear from anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area or knows the whereabouts of the items stolen. Calls should be made to PC Laura Harris at Haverhill Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A large quantity of power tools were stolen from a garden shed in at the weekend and police are keen to hear from anyone who may have any information about this.

The incident happened between 9.30pm on Saturday and 9.20am on Sunday at an address in Alderton Close.

The rear garden was entered and shed broken into. A search was made of the shed and various power tools including an air stapler, air nail gun, electric planer, MDS hand drill, jigsaw in a black case, router in a black case, portable Wrox drill and a compressor were stolen.

The items are heavy and a vehicle would be required to take them away. Police would like to hear from anyone who saw a person or persons acting suspiciously in the area, knows the whereabouts of the items stolen, or has been offered them for sale.
