No CCTV protection for toilets

Wednesday, 17th February 2010.

Councillors decided last night not to pay £12,000 for a CCTV camera to prevent vandalism at the toilets on Recreation Ground.

There had been concern that the facility would be targeted when the current system of having a permanent attendant is axed in April.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council has decided to save £35,000 by having only one attendant for the two toilet facilities it operates in Haverhill, on the Rec and in Jubilee Walk.

Members were afraid vandalism could set in and the toilets, which a survey showed are highly valued by the public, would be closed.

Cllr Maureen Byrne said without someone on site the toilets would be vandalised and closed within six months, but she didn't agree with a CCTV camera.

"If I thought it would stop vadalism, etc, then okay, but it won't," she said. "We must get our borough council representatives to protest about taking the permanent attendant away. It is not acceptable."

Members agreed the toilets were the borough council's responsibility, and not te town council's.
