Now you can get official timings for your running

Thursday, 15th August 2013.

Haverhill Running Club has gained funding from the Greater Cambridge Athletics Network to be able to offer 5km timed runs which they hold every month for members to anyone in Haverhill aged over 11 for just £2.

The timed runs will take place at 7pm on the last Thursday of every month.

The run will take place on the old railway track behind the Leisure Centre, which is now one of two permanently marked 5km running routes in Haverhill set up in collaboration with St Edmundsbury Borough Council in 2012. The other is at East Town Park.

The timed monthly runs follow the very successful Sport Relief Mile event which took place on the route in 2011.

Trevor Bunch, from Haverhill Running Club, said: “5km is the shortest and most accessible distance that most recreational runners will start with so it is a good goal to aim for.

"For the more experienced runners it is a chance to test how fast they can complete the route and challenge themselves each time to improve on their personal best.

“We hope that by opening up the timed runs each month, thanks to financial support from the England Athletics, it will encourage more people to use the permanently marked running routes in the town in their own time and to use the monthly runs as a way of measuring how they are improving.”

Individual times will be posted on the running club’s website at www.haverhillrunningclub.org.uk after the runs.

Michelle Banfield-Curran, Abbeycroft Leisure’s partnership manager, said: “The timed 5km runs will start and finish from the Leisure Centre and we are delighted to support this fantastic community club initiative.

"It allows people who are not members of the club to take part experience the club atmosphere and set themselves goals which is vital in keeping the motivation to keep active.”

There is no need to register to take part in the 5km timed runs - just turn up at the Leisure Centre at 7pm on the last Thursday of every month.
