OAP angry over glass on cycleway

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 24th January 2002.

A disabled pensioner says he has just had a third puncture on his electric scooter repaired, caused by broken glass on Haverhill’s cycleways.

Roland Cannon, 71, of Pentlow Hake Close, Haverhill, suffers from severe arthritis and uses the scooter to get around.

Mr Cannon uses the stretch of cycleway leading from his home to the town and had his latest puncture at the hill near Haverhill Leisure Centre. He then had to push the scooter to Ebley Tyres in the old station yard to get it repaired.

“The cycleway is covered with broken glass and it has been like that for weeks and weeks. I have been into the council offices twice to report in but they have done absolutely nothing about it.

“as you come the other way there are leaves off the trees as well and it is just an accident waiting to happen.

”If you get a puncture itn is not easy to push one of these scooters. There must have been hundreds of cyclists getting punctures , it is not good enough,” Mr Cannon said.

A spokesman for St Edmundsbury Borough Council said the environmental inspector had carried out an inspection following Mr Cannon’s complaint and found some glass on the cycleway, although more was on the grass.

He had arranged for the glass to be cleared yp, but could not find any previous reports of similar complaints.

“If there has been a breakdown in communications we do apologise,” the spokesman said.”
