Opposition to 'a block too far' at old water works

Wednesday, 8th January 2014.

Plans by Havebury Housing Partnership to build another block of flats at the old water works at Burton End have run into opposition from the town council.

Havebury have completed Block A on the site and have planning permission for Block B, but now they are applying for permission for Block C,and councillors called this 'a block too far'.

In the public forum at the council's planning committee meeting last night, borough councillor Gordon Cox drew attention to issues of overlooking, after representations from residents.

When councillors vame to debate the application, town mayor Cllr Roger Andre said he had a series of concerns - the impact on neighbours, car access, possible land contamination and the removal of treesfor no good reason.

Cllr Pat Hanlon said the exit from the cul-de-sac onto Burton End was almost blind, and very dangerous even with just the one block of flats in occupation.

Block C envisaged 12 two-bedroom and three oner-bedroom flats being built. Councillors have lodged their objections with St Edmundsbury Borough Counil planners who will decide the issue.
