Over 100 caught without seatbelts in campaign week

Thursday, 25th February 2010.

Over 100 people were issued with fixed penalty notices as Suffolk police took part in a week-long European seatbelt enforcement campaign last week.

Between Monday, February 15, and Sunday February 21, officers were deployed countywide to clamp down on people not wearing a seatbelt or not using the appropriate child restraints.

In total 101 fixed penalty notices were issued, equating to an average of nearly 14.5 per day.

Of these, 94 were given in relation to the driver of the vehicle not wearing a seatbelt and seven in relation to a passenger.

All the notices issued were given to adults and none were in relation to a child, with the recipients incurring a minimum of an instant £60 fine.

So far this year the weekly average of notices issued in Suffolk for seatbelt offences is 41. During this campaign that number was more than doubled.

This year’s figure also show a slight increase on a similar campaign run in September last year, where 92 notices were issued, equating to an average of just over 13 per day.

Chief Inspector Mike Bacon from Suffolk's roads policing unit said: “The results of this campaign make it all too apparent that there are
still too many people ignoring road safety messages.

"It is disappointing that so many fixed penalty notices were issued. One person knowingly taking a risk like this is too many, let alone 101.”

“I cannot understand why people don’t wear their seatbelt. It’s a simple and quick task of which the importance should not be underestimated.

"Even on short journeys or at low speeds seatbelts can mean the difference between life and death. We will continue to crackdown on this offence throughout the year and I would appeal to all motorists and passengers to wear their seatbelts on every journey.”

Any motorists caught without a seatbelt will be given an instant Fixed Penalty Notice of £60 and could face a fine of up to £500.
