Palmer free kick sets the tone

Tuesday, 16th March 2010.

PRESIDENT'S CUP: Waltham Abbey under 15s 1 Haverhill Rovers Eastern Junior Alliance under 15s 2, match report.

Rovers assault on three trophies gained more momentum with a comfortable win in the Presidents Cup.

Playing against the breeze on a difficult 3g surface, Rovers started slowly. Abbey, though, posed almost no threat as the ever-reliable back four and goalkeeper snuffed out what the home side could offer.

As the half wore on Rovers began to create some chances, as Gathercole with a header and Clark with a run and shot both went close.

The second half was a much more one-sided affair as Rovers began to get a grip on proceedings, especially after Adam Palmer smashed a 35-yard free kick over the Abbey’s goalkeeper's head to make it 1-0.

Rovers went two up not long after, another free kick, this time from Taylor, and Robson headed in. Taylor then hit the bar as Rovers threatened to run riot.

Abbey, though, to their credit, did not give up and twice went close before getting and converting a penalty with a couple of minutes to go.
