Park keeper visits from down under

Thursday, 6th September 2001.

A PARK keeper from Down Under has been smelling the roses in England and paid a visit to Haverhill during his travels.

Quentin Schulze, 45, comes from the city of Tea Tree Gully, a suburb or Adelaide, South Australia, and is on a nine-month tour of the UK.

He spent a day in Haverhill with park ranger Colin Jakes during a trip around St
Edmundsbury’s parks.

Mr Schulze is a horticulturalist by trade and is responsible for maintenance contracts for around 600 parks in Australia. He wanted to come to England and tend a traditional English garden, but as he could not get a work permit, decided that a tour was the next best thing.

Mr Schulze hopes to take plenty of tips back with him and said many problems
faced, such as vandalism, are identical in both countries.

“It is exactly the same, kids just don’t respect things. The main difference is that we have to water our parks for six months of the year if we want our grass to be green.

“We also don’t have bedded plants because we cannot afford it and we don’t have the climate. If I had come here and not seen bedded plants I would have been very disappointed.”
