Patrols increased in wake of cemetery damage

Tuesday, 6th July 2010.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area of Haverhill cemetery after last week's incident where graves were vandalised and items stolen.

They are also keen to hear from anyone who might have any information to help them catch the culprits.

"Any information would be helpful," said Haverhill police chief, Insp Chris Galley, "and it can be given in confidence via the Crimestoppers phone line."

Insp Galley confirmed they were looking into a noticeble increase in a variety of minor crimes such as vandalism, theft from cars and gardens, and burglary of homes, factories and sheds, which has occurred in recent weeks.

The damage at the cemetery in Withersfield Road happened between Saturday and Monday, June 26-28.

Haverhill police said a man visiting his son's grave on Monday found flowers had been thrown around and a glass dome vase had disappeared.

He reported several other graves had been affected.

Anyone with information should call Sgt Sarah Bartley at the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
