Penalty pain after ast-gasp equaliser

Monday, 26th October 2009.

EASTERN JUNIOR ALLIANCE LEAGUE UNDER 15s
LEAGUE CHALLENGE CUP

Haverhill Rovers 1
Brentwood 1 (aet)
Brentwood won on pens

Haverhill crashed out of the cup on penalties after a lacklustre performance.

The first-half didn’t really produce many goalmouth incidents thanks to the solid defence of Gage, Kennedy, Hardwick and Palmer.

Going forward, Rovers offered little. It wasn’t till the stroke of half-time that Gathercole had a shot on target - unfortunately it was straight at the keeper.

The home team pushed forward more after the break but the visitors edged the play only to find Saville in fine form in goal. The game was goalless at full time so extra time loomed.

In the first period, Brentwood broke down the left, the ball came into the box and the visitors scored.

With time running out Bishop picked up the ball down the left flank , he turned his man and put in a great cross which Gathercole rose to head home with only seconds remaining.

This took the tie to penalties. Haines missed the first pen but Saville saved the visitors' second to take the shootout to sudden death after Palmer, Kennedy, Gathercole and Clarke put theirs away.

Gage hit the post and Bishop saw his effort saved by the keeper as Brentwood fired home to win the tie.
