Place Court to be replaced

Wednesday, 17th February 2010.

Place Court care home in Camps Road, Haverhill, is to be replaced by a new facility somewhere else in the town, and the land redeveloped.

Suffolk County Council recently announced the plan and Haverhill town clerk Gordon Mussett relayed the information to Haverhill Town Council members at their meeting last night.

Cllr Lynn Burgess said she had been told it would probably be about four years before the new development happened.

The town council was keen that the adjoining Bevan House site, which the council owns and leases to the British Red Cross, should be on a flexible lease to allow the council to take advantage of any opportunity to include it in the redevelopment.

The lease is currently up for renewal in September.

"There is no timescale yet on the Place Court plan, but the town council needs to be in a position to act," said Mr Mussett.

Members agreed to another five-year lease, but with break clauses after one, two and three years.

There was concern about where the Red Cross would go when they had to leave, but Mr Mussett said there were various possibilities, such as potentially redundant school sites, and even the new facility replacing Place Court, depending on where it was situated.
