Plan for better bus services

By Rob Neal on Thursday, 20th June 2002.

A radical review of Haverhill’s transport infrastructure is under way with plans for better bus services and safer roads.

Improved provision for disabled people and a number of new cycle ways are also included in the ambitious plans put forward by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

Cabinet member Peter Dulieu revealed the council was concerned at the town’s rapid growth and recognised the need for major investment.

It is preparing to submit bids to Suffolk County Council to secure funding for a range of projects.

One of the most ambitious projects is a £40,000 review of traffic calming in Chalkstone Way.

The busy road his the headlines last week after residents complained the current speed cushions did little to slow down motorists.

Coun Dulieu said alternative measures would be looked at.

The council is also set to meet bus operators to look at improving services in and around Haverhill.

“The problem is that the routes we want to run are not the most profitable so we need to look at possible subsidising of some routes,” said Coun Dulieu.

The council is also look at the impact of heavy goods vehicles on the town and is awaiting the findings of an independent report.

Coun Duleu said the council may consider a lorry park similar to the one near Bury St Edmunds.

Around £10,000 could also be spent on dropping kerbs to help disabled people get around town.

Cycle routes to Burton End, New Cangle and Place Farm Primary Schools are also being considered, along with an extension to the current route to the railway station.

The plans were set to be discussed by the cabinet this week.

Each plan will be submitted to the county council for funding, although the borough has already committed £200,000.

“It is doubtful whether we can secure funding for each and every project but the fact we have pledged “200,000 will certainly help negotiations,” said Coun Dulieu.
