Plans for High Street improvements considered

Thursday, 16th June 2011.

The first meeting of Haverhill Area Working Party since the election of the new St Edmundsbury Borough Council took place last week and heard about street lighting, high street enhancement and public art.

The group has a new chairman, Cllr Karen Richardson, and heard updates on the ongoing consultations around the new local plan, Haverhill Vision 2013, and also how the work of the town centre manager will be continued now that the post-holder Tina Hanks has not had her contract renewed by the council.

But the main discussions centred around two presentations from Suffolk County Council.

The first was about changes to street-lighting, by which lights will be dimmed between 1am and 5am to save money, except at certyain important locations.

The group was being consulted by the council on which locations should be exceptions. If anyone has concerns on the issue which they want to raise they can approach their local councillor to highlight the issue in the consultation.

The second presentation was about what high street enhancements are planned as a result of £750,000 being made available by the St Edmundsbury Growth Area Partnership.

These include paving High Street between Swan Lane and Quakers Lane, changing to white lighting all through and brimnging street furniture in line with the distinctive Haverhill design.

A further £250,000 is likely to become available for the high street as part of the planning agreement to develop the former Project site at Hamlet Green, but it is not available yet, so will be earmarked for further improvements later.

The public artwork group PATCH, which oversaw the creation of the gates for Queen Street, will be responsible for the creation of some artwork for High Street, and will be working with local schools again as on that project.

But Cllr Richardson stressed this would not be new barriers for High Street, which the group was standing aside from, and was more likely to be some form of life-size statue.
