Plaudits and lessons from the Big Freeze

Friday, 26th February 2010.

Although the threat of more snow has note yet gone away, Suffolk has been reflecting on the winter in The Big Freeze workshop.

Community and business leaders came together at Suffolk County Council's headquarterts in Ipswich with colleagues from voluntary groups to share their experiences of how Suffolk responded to the recent heavy snow.

There were examples from across the county of local people looking after friends and neighbours, and clearing snow at their local school, to community-based street teams clearing roads and pavements and people with 4x4s offering to help with essential services.

As well as sharing experiences, a number of ideas as to how things could be improved were also put forward.

Ideas included making better use of staff within their local area to help services continue to operate even when travel is more difficult.

Cllr Jeremy Pembroke, leader of Suffolk County Council, said; “Suffolk responded well to the recent adverse weather. However, there are always lessons to be learnt and different ways of working that will make Suffolk’s response even better.

"By coming together we have recognised some of the bigger issues that we can start to address alone and those where we need to work together to ensure a more seamless response for Suffolk.

“I wish to thank everyone who attended the Big Freeze to share their experiences and ideas. There were many examples of great community spirit and people going the extra mile, which is so typical of Suffolk people.”
