Playscheme under threat

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 15th March 2001.

HAVERHILL'S Summer Fun Playscheme may have to be cancelled because a venue cannot be found.
Organisers face the same situation as last year, when Castle Hill Middle School steeped in at the last minute to allow the scheme to go ahead,
The Playscheme Committee has written to all 12 schools in the town asking to use their buildings. The five replies received so far were all negative.
The group holds its annual meeting on Wednesday, March 21, at Haverhill Library, starting at 7:30pm, and unless a venue can be found soon, the scheme looks unlikely to go ahead.
This would be the 13th year of the annual playscheme, which caters for around 99 children, aged between five and 13, during the first three weeks of the sumemr holidays.
Kaz Hewitt, the chairman travels 60 miles a day from her home near Stowmarket to help run the scheme, bringing her own three children. She is pessimistic about its chances of going ahead this year,
"I feel devestated, I have been doing this playscheme since 1992 and it just seems to be getting such a struggle each year to find a venue" she said.
"We are getting new parents all the time saying how marvellous it is and we have children whi started when they were four still coming at 13. We had our best report ever last year from Social Services, who refer a lot of children.
"I just feel so sorry for the members of of my committee. I am committed to the scheme and so are they, while you get people within Haverhill who are just not helping. I wonder what we have down wrong, we tidy up after ourselves and leave the schools as clean or cleaner than we find them," Mrs Hewitt said.
Grants have been applied for, but will not be paid until a venue os found.
The committee is still fundraising becausem even if the scheme does not go ahead, it will still have to pay £1,500 for storage of its equipment.
Volunteers are also needed. To help or suggest a venue, contact Heather Polley, secretary on (01440) 707529
