Plea for return of 100lb metal sculpture

Friday, 5th February 2010.

Residents of Castle Hedingham are wondering if anyone in the Haverhill area can help in locating an unusual sculpture which has been stolen from the village.

It has been over four weeks now since thieves snatched the artwork and, although the crime was reported to local police on December 30, no information has come to light.

A one off, the distinctive sculpture, officially named Unsettling Dreams but known locally as ‘
The Bug, was stolen around December 28 or 29.

Over four feet in height and weighing more than 45 kilos, the semi-abstract work, depicting an oversized insect with wide wings and antennae, had adorned a massive tree stump on a corner of Sheepcot Road, Castle Hedingham for nearly a decade. Many people would have seen the enigmatic sculpture as they drove through Castle Hedingham.

Its creator, Steed Doe, welded the artwork from iron. He said: "We believed at first that the sculpture was taken as a prank and would soon be returned, but it hasn’t. I am baffled and disappointed.

The missing sculpture leaves a notable gap in the countryside and enquiries are ongoing to locate its whereabouts and identify the offenders responsible for the theft. The owner is appealing for anyone who has seen the sculpture or knows where it is to contact him.

Transport would have been required to remove the heavy statue so anyone who saw a suspicious vehicle or anyone acting suspiciously nearby should also get in touch.

Anyone with information on the missing sculpture is asked to contact Essex Police.
