Police appeal for witnesses after town centre attack on two women

Monday, 14th March 2011.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen a man who assaulted two women in Empire Yard in Haverhill town centre in the early hours of Saturday.

The 18 and 19-year olds were walking through High Street between 2am and 2.20am and turned up Empire Yard between Barclays Bank and Dolland and Aitchison.

A man, who they had seen moments before walking along the High Street, approached from behind and pulled their hair.

He pushed them against a wall and threatened them. One of the women was able to get free and run into High Street where she found some friends.

The man then walked off along High Street with a second man. Neither of the women were hurt.

The attacker is described as white, between 5ft 2in and 5ft 6in tall, of medium, stocky build with stubble and was wearing a black top, blue jeans and a distinctive Mexican-style hat with balls or corks hanging from the brim.

The second man is described as white, 6ft tall and was wearing a short-sleeved grey top.

Police want to speak to this man and anyone else who was in Haverhill town centre early on Saturday morning and may have seen the women or the attacker before or after the incident.

Calls in relation to this incident should be made to DC Maria Allgood at West Suffolk CID on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
