Police assaulted as trouble spills out from Bar Vu

Monday, 12th November 2012.

Two police officers were assaulted during a fracas outside Bar Vu, the town's cocktail bar, at around 1am on Sunday morning.

An incident inside the bar in which a member of the bar's door supervisors was assaulted spilled out into the street, where police were already in attendance.

PC Simon Bourne said one main offender assaulted an officer by punching him on the nose, and then another in the group assaulted another officer, punching him in the left ear.

PC Bourne said the assaults were carried out with complete disregard of police presence.

A man from Linton has been charged with the main assault.

PC Bourne, who is the town police's licensing officer, took over today as the officer responsible for the town centre, so he said in both capacities he would be talking to the operators of Bar Vu.

Under a new system if an offence is linked with licensed premises, the local licensing officer is instructed to liaise with the premises, to discover whether the incident may have resulted from such things as cheap alcohol promotions.
