Police catch 17 illegally modified vehicles in four hours

Saturday, 5th April 2014.

Seventeen vehicles were stopped during an operation to target illegally modified cars in Haverhill on Tuesday.

The road traffic operation took place between 7pm and 11pm in the Aldi supermarket car park in Lordscroft Lane.

The operation was organised to target cars illegally modified by the young and the inexperienced.

Three teams of officers identified suitable vehicles while a further team of officers based themselves at the test site. At the site there were also two vehicle examiners along with the assistance of the road safety team from Suffolk County Council.

The road safety team brought along a simulator where drivers could experience dangerous situations on roads and experience day to day challenges.

They also brought along a moped brake horsepower testing device, which was used to test that mopeds had not been de-restricted by their owners which would allow the rider to go faster than they were allowed to go.

Out of the 17 vehicles which were directed to the testing site, various offences were found ranging from having illegal tinted windows, illegal number plates and faulty interior and exterior lighting.

One vehicle was found to have no MOT and a Fixed Penalty Notice was issued to the driver.

One vehicle had illegal tinted front windows. the driver was made to remove the tints before leaving the testing site.

Three vehicles were prohibited, one due to a bulge in a tyre (tyre corrected on site), the second vehicle had a tyre which was under the legal tread, again corrected on site, and the third vehicle was prohibited due to the poor state of the vehicle and it not being roadworthy.

Four vehicles were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices for their non-standard exhaust systems exceeding the legal sound readings. Two vehicles were searched for cannabis.

The insurance companies for all vehicles have been contacted to inform them of the modifications found on the vehicles.

This allows the insurance companies to check that the policy-holders have disclosed the correct information when taking the policy out, as failing to provide the correct information can lead to the insurance policy being void.

Police Community Support Officer Lorna Chapman from the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "Local people often raise their concerns to us about anti-social behaviour; especially regarding the manner certain vehicles are being used.

"We held this operation to target those who flout the law, not only as an enforcement measure but also to educate people as well.

"We would like to thank Aldi who kindly allowed us to use their car park for the evening.”
