Police chief hits out at lack of progress on High Street traffic

Thursday, 21st June 2012.

Haverhill's police chief has spoken of his frustration at the lack of a permanent solution to the regulation of High Street traffic, which has thrown the issue back to his officers.

Insp Peter Ferrie said police were 'banging their heads against a brick wall' in trying to deal with illegal parking and driving in nthe street by means of enforcement.

Monday night's public meeting of the town's Safer Neighbourhood Team voted for enforcement against law-breaking motorists in High Street to once again become a police priority for the next three months.

Insp Ferrie said: "The SNT priorities are rightly set by the public who attend the three-monthly meetings.

"However, we are simply banging our heads against a brick wall with parking in the High Street.

"This is a chronic, long-term problem that won't go away until the High Street has barriers in a similar way to Queen Street.

"I am extremely frustrated that a more long-term solution isn't being pushed through. I do know many of our civic leaders are equally frustrated that the clear need for a solution is being blocked by the few people who don't want barriers."
