Police chief thanks public after 'helpful' meeting

Tuesday, 14th September 2010.

Haverhill's senior policeman has thanked the members of the public who turned up to the new-look Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting last week and made it a success.

Insp Chris Galley said there were 25 residents present which was far more than the previous SNT meetings had attracted.

The new system revolves around public meetings once a quarter rather than once a month, and held in the evenings rather than the afternoons.

As a result of last week's meeting new priorities have been set and e problem-solving meeting with partner agencies will be held today to begin work on them.

The three priorities are:
* Reducing anti-social behaviour around the aeroplane park play area on the Chalkstone estate, which is a continuing issue;

* Addressing anti-social behaviour by groups of young people in Strasbourg Square on Friday and Saturday evenings;

* Dealing with anti-social behaviour on Recreation Ground, particular issues being litter, alcohol and dog behaviour.

Insp Galley described the meeting as 'very helpful' for both residents and police, and urged other people to come along to the next one, to be held on December 9.

Any issues which crop up in the interim should be reported to police in the usual way, who will take them on to the monthly problem-solving meetings for consideration as new priorities.

Other issues raised at the meeting will also be looked into, Insp Galley said.

Residents were very concerned about parking and traffic in Haverhill HIgh Street, but were informed by the meeting chjairman, Cllr Tim Marks, that progress was being made on bringing in regulations to deal with the issue.
