Police hail Friday's crackdown as a success

Tuesday, 1st June 2010.

Haverhill police are hailing Friday evening's crackdown on anti-social behaviour and alcohol in public places as a big success.

Operation Alcopops saw ten officers in a team supported by special constables, and including two officers with head cameras and officers with drug dogs, in high visibility patrols throughout the town centre and its associated alcohol-free zone.

The operation ran from 4pm to midnight and resulted in no arrests at all as there were only two events involving anti-social behaviour throught the town.

This represented a massive reduction on the same weekend last year, when warmer weather and the beginning of half-term combined.

There were three encounters in which cannabis was seized, in each case youths being dealt with by means of street warnings.

Police had 11 encounters with youths with regard to alcohol in the alcohol-free zone, with alcohol being seized and disposed of.

This all amounted to far fewer incidents than police were expecting, and Haverhill's police chief, Insp Chris Galley hailed the operation as a success.

Further work is due to be done throughout the summer along with partnership agencies to reduce anti-social behaviour in the town.

This month, police are particularly concentrating on their Safer Neighbourhood Team's monthly priority area of the Railway Walk.

Yes, I daresay, but they're not there every Friday, are they?
