Police in hunt for car driver

Thursday, 2nd August 2001.

POLICE are appealing for information after a woman cyclist was accosted at Haverhill in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The 32-year-old woman was travelling along Cambridge Way , towards the High Street, at around 5.45am.

She was approaching bollards in the road close to a block of garages when she saw a black ford Escort XR3i parked across her route.

As she drew closer, a man got out of the car and made an obscene remark. When she carried on cycling, the man drove off and waited at the junction of Eastern Avenue, effectively blocking her way.

The frightened woman managed to make her escape by hurriedly cycling towards the High Street.

The man is thought to have been driving a "P" registration black Ford Escort XR3i convertible. He is described as white, around 40 years old, slim build, with short dark hair, wearing a white shirt, and he spoke with a local accent.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any other information should contact Suffolk Police on (01284) 774100 or Crimestoppers on Freephone 0800 555 111.
