Police lead initiative to help elderly and vulnerable

Tuesday, 6th November 2012.

Haverhill police have led a multi-agency initiative throughout the town over the last couple of weeks to check up on elderly or vulnerable people.

The police, the fire service, the Red Cross, Havebury housing, Haverhill Volunteer Centre and St Edmundsbury Borough Council joined forces to call on over 1,300 homes across the town.

Haverhill’s police chief, Insp Peter Ferrie, said the initiative, called Operation Gunpowder, had proved very worthwhile and would be repeated.

Of 1,313 homes called on, and 590 residents spoken to, only two were given ‘Homeshield’ referrals because of their vulnerability. Twenty had referrals to the fire service for fitting a smoke alert or fire safety device.

Issues of street lighting, parking, anti-social behaviour, noise, neighbour disputes, and rubbish left in the street were raised, but Insp Ferrie said most people spoken to were happy, safe and had no issues to report.
