Police probe 'suspicious' fire at carpet store

Tuesday, 27th August 2002.

AN investigation has been launched after a carpet shop in Haverhill almost collapsed during a fire at the weekend.

The fire broke out at Bowes & Bowes in the High Street just before 8pm on Saturday.

Fire crews, who battled to bring the blaze in the two-storey building under control, drafted in St Edmundsbury Borough Council building officers when they became concerned about the safety of the structure.

And although the fire was brought under control by 10.25pm the fire service remained in attendance at the scene throughout the night.

A spokesperson for Suffolk police said, although it was still unclear how the fire started, it was being treated as suspicious and an investigation was now under way.

He said: "Initial examinations were carried out at the scene on the night and further examinations will take place in conjunction with the fire service."
