Police seek information after second assault

By Martin Chapman on Thursday, 26th August 2004.

Haverhill Police are renewing appeals for information regarding an indecent assault.

In the early hours of Sunday August 15th a woman was indecently assaulted at a recreation ground in town on Ingham Road.

The renewed appeal follows news that a 17 year old woman has come forward to police to say the previous week she was indecently assaulted in the same area of town.

At around 12.10 am on Sunday August 8th the woman was walking her dog along a footpath that runs from the Sports Centre to Ingham Road.

The woman was grabbed from behind and indecently assaulted. Her dog barked at the offender who let go and ran off. The woman was shaken by the incident but was not injured.

Police have issued a description saying the man is white, had hairy arms and a strong bodily odour.

Acting Detective Inspector Simon Curtis said: “although the woman did not want to make a formal complaint we are looking into both offences and will be investigating to determine if the incidents are linked.”

Police are appealing for information on either incident.

In the first a 24 year old woman was walking in the area when she was grabbed from behind between around 1 am and 1.30 am. She was indecently assaulted by the man who is described as wearing a dark coloured short sleeve top and dark trousers or jeans.

If anyone was in the area in the early hours of either Sunday August 8th or 15th, Suffolk police would like to hear from you as they believe you may have information which could assist them.

Anyone with information can contact Haverhill CID on 01284 774100 or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
