Police warn people to lock their back gates

Tuesday, 9th March 2010.

Police in Haverhill are warning people to lock the back gates to their properties after reports of burglars trying to get in that way during the night.

Sgt Sarah Bartley of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team said they had had three reports in the last few days, from widely differing areas of the town, of people finding their back gates open in the morning.

These were cases where residents had closed their back gate the previous evening, but not locked it.

Burglars had clearly been trying properties to see if they were locked, and had got into the back garden but then found the house locked or some other deterrent.

"We would warn people to make sure they have a bolt or lock on their back gates," she said. "On one occasion an iron bar had been taken from the garden, that was usually used to secure the premises but had not been in place that night."

The warning also extends to conservatories and roof windows, which have bee recent points of entry for burglars.

Sgt Bartley also re-iterated recent police warnings to people not to leave valuables in their cars and to make sure their homes were secure.

On Friday night between 11pm and 6.15am next morning, burglars got into a house in Manor Farm Close through an unlocked door and stole keys to a black Citroen C4, which they then stole.

An unlocked grey Renault Laguna in the driveway was also searched.

Anyone who can help with any information about this incident can call DC Andy George at Bury CID on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
