Praise as leisure wins star rating

Thursday, 17th May 2001.

PRAISE has been given to the range of leisure facilitess and events offered by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
A recent inspection by officers from the Audit Commission into the management of leisure services in the borough resulted in two stars being awarded to the department.
No stars equates to poor service, and three stars is excellent.
Inspectors from the Audit Commission visited the borough in December as part of the Government's Best Value Process, where councils have to prove they are providing quality and efficient services.
Praise was also given to effective partnerships and good public support.
Coun Sara Midmay-White, leisure services committee chairman, said: "The inspection was a useful exercise for us which helped confirm the areas where we knew we were being successful, as well as highlighting areas which needed more work.
"We have already started to put right those problems and are delighted that Leisure Services has been give a coveted two star award for its efforts."
Among problems highlighted were budgeting and under-use of some facilites, but these have since been tackled, and a review of services has led to the budget being well within its spending limits.
