Pupils tackle racism issues

Thursday, 29th November 2001.

A CHANCE to meet pupils from other schools and discuss racism issues was offered at Castle Manor Upper School last week.

The third annual Mingle Conference organised by Suffolk County Council was held at the Haverhill school and more than 100 pupils aged between 13 and 16 years attended. As well as Castle Manor pupils, others attended from Samuel Ward Upper School in Haverhill and King Edward VI Upper School in Bury St Edmunds. Actor Michael Clarke gave a thought provoking live performance, re-enacting what it is like to be the victim of a racist incident.

There were also competitions, music and free resource packs.

Topics covered in workshops included racism experftienced by travellers and asylum seekers, what young people can do to challenge racism and how schools can combat it.

Bryony Rudkin, of Suffolk County Council’s executive committee, said the aim of the conference was to increase pupils’ knowledge and understanding of racism issues.

CAPTION: Let's Mingle ... Tiffany Brown, left, a youth worker, and Rodney Hurd, from YMCA Training, talk to Castle Manor pupils Claire Weglowski, left, and Ami Elavia, both aged 14.
