Pushing on with the wheelbarrow race

Thursday, 19th July 2001.

HAVERHILL'S Wheelbarrow Race, a major institution until the 1970s, is being revived this year in aid of charity group LAMPH.

Crowds used to line the streets for many years while competitors pushed their barrows between the town's pubs, drinking beer at each on the way.

This year LAMPH, the local group for children and adults with disabilities, is organising a wheelbarrow race to coincide with the Recreation Ground Bash and Fun Run on Sunday, July 29.

Cathy Page, of the LAMPH committee, said all the town's pubs had agreed to raise teams and it was hoped to attract fancy dress entries.

The centre of the town will be closed off for the Fun Run, so a shorter course than the old one will be set up, starting off at the White Hart at 1pm. A series of races is planned through to 3pm.

Mrs Page said: "We thought it would be nice to revive it and the police have agreed because the road is already closed.

"We have got our time-keepers and it will be run as a time trial.

"We would like to see some silly ones as well. Aurora Sport has donated the trophies so there will be one for fancy dress. The pubs have all agreed to support it but anyone else is most welcome to take part."

The entry fee will be £10 a team and the minimum age is 18, as six half pints of beer must be drunk along the way.

Entry forms are available at the News office in Queen Street and must be returned by Wednesday July 25.
