Recycle Christmas waste, council urges

Thursday, 31st December 2009.

Suffolk County Council is urging people to recycle waste produced from the festive season.

It has been estimated that each person in England throws away an average of 50 kilos of waste over Christmas.

The council is pointing people in the direction of household waste recycling centres where you can recycle or re-use your used or unwanted festive items.

The council says with all the new gifts received this Christmas, there are bound to be clear-outs of old furniture or electrical items.

Contact the Community Recycling Network (www.crn.org.uk) or Furniture Re-use Network (www.frn.org.uk) as they can help collect and distribute unwanted furniture and household goods.

Anything with batteries, a plug or charger can be recycled at Haverhill's household waste recycling centres in Coupals Road. The centre is open from 8am0 until 4pm during the festive period, except for New Years Day.

As well as all your Christmas recycling you can also bring a wide range of materials and bulkier items, such as furniture and garden waste, including Christmas trees, for recycling or reusing.

When recycling Christmas trees remember to remove all decorations, pots and presents! Check with St Edmundsbury Council to find the best way to recycle your Christmas trees, cards, etc.

Cllr Lisa Chambers, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder for waste, said: “There is a need for us all to do more to reduce, re-use and recycle our own waste, as we are not only running out of space in landfill sites, but we also accept this is not an environmentally friendly way of dealing with our waste.

"The festive period can create a huge amount of waste, such as wrapping paper, boxes and glass bottles. It is easy to recycle these throughout Suffolk, not only at your local HWRC, but also at bring sites and recycling banks."

By doing your bit this Christmas, everyone in Suffolk can work towards making Suffolk the Greenest County. To find out more about this aspiration visit www.greensuffolk.org

Its all very well for the great and the good from Suffolk CC telling us to recycle, but as someone who has worked for SuffolkCC for a number of years they need to look closer to home as their own record for recycling, plus their own policies that contribute to landfill and fuel wastage are abysmal.
