Red dragon hands golden tickets to hard-working children

Friday, 20th May 2011.

Haverhill Leisure Centre mascot Scales the Dragon dropped in to Coupals Primary School on Wednesday to reward children who have been studying for tests.

Scales dropped in to the school in Chalkstone Way to hand out golden tickets which gave the children discounted entry to the centre’s Kid City indoor play area.

Head teacher Charles Hardingham said: “We welcome many characters through our doors each week but none much stranger than our large red friend Scales and his friends from the Leisure Centre in Haverhill.

"It was a most welcome visit for our hard-working year two class who have been ploughing through tests for the last few weeks.

"Each child was kindly presented with a discount voucher for Kids City where they can let off their frustrations of late. We are most grateful to the Leisure Centre for thinking of us.”

The Leisure Centre will now visit the school each month to reward a different class with the golden Kid City tickets and staff from Coupals will choose the hard-working class of the month.

The £650,000 Kid City play area opened in 2009 at Haverhill Leisure Centre. Designed for under fives and for five to 12-year-olds, it is packed full of equipment including a two-storey tower complete with speed slide for older children, a ball pool for smaller people and a café and lounge area for accompanying adults.

Laura Flowers, the Leisure Centre’s assistant manager, said: “We managed to disrupt a whole school with excitement.

"The children were so pleased to see Scales and it was a really nice way to reward the children for all their hard work. We have worked with Coupals Primary School before on our popular Fit 4 U project and the staff are very welcoming.”
