Refurished memorial to Boer war soldiers unveiled

Tuesday, 23rd October 2001.

A SUFFOLK war memorial to those who died in the Boer war has been unveiled this week after renovations costing £20,000.

Sadly, over the years the plagues on the memorial, bearing the names of soldiers who died had worn away through pollution and weather damage. The renovations for the maintenance were funded by St Edmundsbury Borough Council who are responsible for the upkeep of war memorials.

New plaques had to be made, because the old ones were beyond repair. But before the old ones could be taken down extensive work was undertaken to ensure every name was correctly recorded by taking photographs and a magnifying glass to decipher the more obscured and damaged letters.

It was also discovered that the brick pillars inside the memorial, which were supporting the statue of the soldier on top, had deteriorated and needed repair.

Other changes have also been made, with easier access being provided to the monument itself and the bollards around the memorial have been moved closer to it to stop them being damaged by traffic. The nearby flower boxes have been removed but will be returned in the spring. Wire fencing which surrounded the memorial while the work was being carried out has been removed. Now the public can get their first close-up look at a memorial to honour those who died in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902.
