Residents get house pledge

By Jo Deeks on Wednesday, 29th November 2000.

RESIDENTS have been promised that parking and the design of a house planned for people with Downs Syndrome at Vange Place in Haverhill will be looked into.
Residents protested strongly about the plan by the Papworth Trust, in partnership with St Edmundsbury Borough Council and social services, for what is currently an open grassed area.
Now the plan has been withdrawn. It will be amended to take into account concerns raised at a consultation meeting.
Karen Mayhew, assistant director of housing for the council, said the plan was also being withdrawn because social services now wanted the building to house four people rather than five.
Architects would try to design something smaller, to fit in better with the 1960s estate. The council would also try to do something about the lack of parking space.
Residents say parking is sometimes so bad in the area close to a school that a fire engine could not get through.
Another concern was that the modern design proposed could make the houses look scruffy and devalue them.
Residents were also upset about the loss of open space, but Mrs Mayhew said the land was designated for housing even though it had been used as a play area.
The residents stressed they were not in any way objecting to the people who would live in the house.
