Rethink over public plaza will cost £80,000

Tuesday, 30th March 2010.

Work costing £80,000 is expected to start soon on removing car parking spaces which have only been in place for 18 months.

Motorists have misused the area beside Subway and Prezzo in Ehringshausen Way to such a degree that it is to be turned into a public plaza and the parking, designated for parents and toddlers only, will be removed.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council says it is not possible enforce this sort of designation under current traffic management legislation.

A report to a recent meeting of the council's cabinet said: "The use of the car park has been so intense, with cars parking outside of the paved areas such as between trees and on designated planted areas, that there is concern
about future maintenance of the landscaping."

There is also concern that the cars spoil the look of the area.

While this area is crammed with cars, the nearby Meadows car park, with 250 spaces, only generally has about 40 in use.

The new public plaza would accessible to all, and be complemented by the installation of seating. It would act as a focal point and could be used for various public events including exhibitions.

Seven of the nearby disabled spaces will be redesignated for parent and toddler parking.

The plaza will also have a play area with play equipment for children.
