Reward for cycling will be hard to collect

Thursday, 17th June 2010.

If you cycle to work, Suffolk County Council will reward you next week with free cycling equipment and cinema tickets - but only if you can cycle to Bury St Edmunds to get them.

Cyclists in Suffolk are to be rewarded for travelling to work by bike as part of a national event taking place next week.

Free cycle bags and equipment will be provided during Bike Week, which runs from 19-27 June, to encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles, and to reduce the cost of obesity and congestion in Suffolk.

Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and Lowestoft are three of Suffolk’s urban areas that have high levels of congestion.

In addition to this, by 2015, obesity is projected to rise by £16 million costing Suffolk Primary Care Trust £162.5 million.

Suffolk County Council is working in partnership to address these issues by encouraging more people to use alternative transport modes to the car, and to walk and cycle more.

High visibility bags will be provided to cyclists in Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and Lowestoft at various locations. The bags will contain a range of cycling equipment alongside free cinema tickets, courtesy of Cineworld and Hollywood cinemas.
