Rising athletics star to visit centre

Thursday, 17th December 2009.

Sporting ambassador and athlete Samantha Milner will be helping youngsters celebrate the 2012 Olympics with a fun-packed morning of sports at Haverhill Leisure Centre on Sunday.

Youngsters aged fiveto 14 will get the chance to try Olympic sports including swimming, athletics and handball at the Go For Gold Day on Sunday, December 20, from 9am to 12 noon.

Samantha, one of Abbeycroft Leisure sports ambassadors and who is currently in the top three U17s in the country in discus and has recently won two welsh titles, will be helping the youngsters learn new sports, answering questions about her sporting achievements and dedication. At the end of the morning each child will receive a medal and certificate.

Michelle Curran, sports development manager, said: “It is so important for youngsters to have sports stars to look up to and this is a unique opportunity for youngsters to meet local medal winners and take part in new sports. This is the third year of Go For Gold and we will hold the event right up until the Olympics in 2012.”

The morning costs £3 and at the end of the taster sessions youngsters who want to take up any of the sports will be given information on the clubs available to join.
