Rovers juggernaut rolls into eighth

Thursday, 1st February 2001.

THE Haverhill Rovers machine rolled on with a 4-1 mauling of Norwich United in Division One of the Jewson league.
They are now in eight position on 21 points from 16 games.
Manager Paul Goodman was left without an assistant after the surprise exit of No 2, John Stephens, but the internal strife did not seem to trouble the players, who put on another impressive display.
The visitors were ahead after five minutes when Adrian Hunt slotted the ball into the top right corner after Adam Smith had found Paul Jenkin in the penalty area, who set up hunt.
Jamie Hunton levelled on 19 minutes, but Rovers were back in front eight minutes later. A Will Jones corner was not cleared and Derrin Brindley headed the ball powerfully into the roof of the net.
Just before the second goal Jenkin fired a 20-yard shot which produced an excellent save from the Norwich goalkeeper.
After 52 minutes Mark Brandt put the game beyond United when he raced on to goalkeeper Dave Walton's long kick and fired in.
Moments later Rovers added a fourth to boost their goals tally.
Ben Cowling was sent clear, but was tackled at the last moment. However the ball broke to leading goalscorer Brandt, who swept the ball home for his 15th of the season.
Norwich hit back but found Haverhill keeper Dave Walton in excellent form.
''I thought we controlled the second half very well,'' said Goodman. ''Paul Jenkin was tremendous. He was big and strong. He was everything you want from a centre-forward. He has taken a lot of criticism lately but he showed what he could do today.''
Goodman was also delighted with the performance if new goalkeeper, Walton whom they signed froim Sudbury in December.
"He pulled off two good saves in the first half and did well."
The manager was particularly impressed with the performance of three youth players - centre-half James Cotton, midfielder Neil Green, and right back Alex Clark.
But on the debit side, Hunt pulled a hamstring and had to go off before half-time, making him doubtful for the next fortnight.
Goodman has also lost his central defensive pairing, Adam Smith must undergo an operation on his throat to cure breathing, and Brindley is suspended for the next five weeks after being sent off against Somersham for violent conduct.
